2010 Chevy Cruze

Chevrolet Cruze claims size doesn’t matter, though you be the judge. A Cruze is GM’s answer to the small car craze that’s rapidly heating up with lots of contenders.

“Cruze is expected to deliver segment-leading 40 mpg highway fuel economy with a new “ECO” model, equipped with a 1.4-liter, four-cylinder, “Ecotec” turbocharged engine and a six-speed automatic transmission. This is a tiny powerplant when compared with the 2.2-liter engine of the Cobalt. Other Cruze models will have a 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine.”

Why Downsize?

Who’s the target market for the Chevrolet Cruze? It would appear that younger drivers who want cute, and compact while others may claim its the elderly.

Regardless, the customers could be both and until we see one it’s hard to make sense of who wants this car.

Is The CR-Z and Fiat going to be a good challenger for this segment? Perhaps.
Chevy Cruze has yet to make a decision of who may be behind the wheel. The other possibility is that the Cruze wants to first hit the streets and make a good impression with potential buyers.

Small is the new Black

Sure mileage matters, and gas prices are always going to fluctuate so making a buying decision based on that is not likely going to make big impacts on a small car segment.

A small car means less gas, but it also means less room and a compromise that some may be unwilling to do at any mileage rating.

So if fuel efficiency isn’t the motivating factor, what could be driving the sales in this segment.

Compact is Clever

Compact cars have a certain kind of owner. They usually fit the profile of someone who likes to be organized. These are also the kind of cars that usually get you around town quite swiftly and sometimes that can be a nice quality to have in a car.

If you’ve ever sat in a compact car that has the quality of a mid or full size car you may have noticed that the way it fit all the features was clever in design and functionality. The type that enjoys miniature replicas, toy trains, models, and arts and crafts would likely be a fit for this style of car.

Conclusion

Maybe you’ve seen the spots labeled compact in the parking spaces and you’ve tried to fit your full size car or truck in there. Sometimes it fits, and other times you wonder who drives the cars that fit in those spots. Regardless, the size of one of these types of cars will continue to impress as you find more and more mini-rewards for driving smaller and less wasteful forms of transportation.
